That matters when you compare it against a five cup machine from another brand, because the Bonavita holds a third more coffee. One owner describes it as the best sized coffee maker they have owned, replacing a twelve cup Cuisinart that was larger than they needed, and specifically values the counter space recovered.
Temperature, Speed and Pre Infusion
A 1100 watt heater is substantial for a five cup machine and it is what makes the published five minute brew time possible. Fast and hot are usually in tension on a drip brewer; more power resolves that by heating the water quickly enough that the cycle does not have to be slow to reach temperature.
The optional pre infusion mode wets the grounds and pauses before the main cycle begins. This is the bloom, and it exists because fresh coffee releases carbon dioxide when it first meets water; that gas physically pushes water away from the grounds and produces uneven extraction. One long term owner puts it exactly that way, describing this machine as the closest thing on the market to a true pour over because of how it heats and sprays. That is a fair description of the design intent rather than a category.

The carafe is double walled stainless with no hot plate, so nothing is being cooked after brewing. Owners consistently report good heat retention, with one saying it holds temperature very well.
There is a specific handling limitation worth knowing. One owner reports that the lid must be on to pour without spilling, which is a problem if you want to grab a cup part way through the brew. The second was still working after eight years of daily use before the carafe began to leak and the brew started slowing.

A 1100 watt heater in a small water path is exactly the configuration that scales up fastest, and the machine has no water filter and no descale reminder. Treat descaling as scheduled maintenance rather than a response to symptoms.
What the Specifications Do Not Settle
The filter type is listed as reusable while the description mentions only a filter basket, so what ships in the box is not stated; Bonavita machines of this shape normally take flat bottom paper filters, and the listing does not confirm whether any are included. No carafe retention figure is published. No warranty term appears in the specification table. The voltage field reads “1.2E+2 Volts (AC)”, which is 120 volts written in scientific notation by software rather than by a person.
Most importantly, the published rating base is roughly 37 ratings since August 2024. That is far too small to judge reliability from, and one of those few reviews reports a replacement unit leaving a puddle of water under the carafe after every use and being returned. The wider Bonavita five cup design has a long record, as the eight year owner account shows, but this specific listing does not.
Who It Suits
This suits one or two people who care about extraction, want a published temperature range rather than a slogan, and value a low profile machine that fits under a cabinet at 10.6 inches high. The pre infusion mode and the flat bottom basket are enthusiast features in a machine that still runs on one button.
Look elsewhere if you brew for more than three people, or if you want a long rating history before buying.
