Instead of heating water when you press a button, it keeps 70 ounces of water permanently hot in an internal stainless steel tank. You lift the lid, pour cold water into the bowl on top, and that displaces hot water straight onto the grounds. That architecture comes from BUNN’s commercial machines and it explains both the appeal and the cost. The Standing Hot Water Tank
This is the whole design. The tank holds 70 ounces of water at brewing temperature continuously, so there is no heat up phase. BUNN describes it as brewing at the flip of a lid, which is accurate: the cold water you pour in pushes hot water out through the sprayhead and the machine has no on switch in the conventional sense.
The consequence is that the machine is always drawing power. BUNN’s own description says it stays on the counter, stays plugged in and stays ready. That is a running cost nobody in this category quantifies and BUNN does not publish a standby figure. It also means the first brew after unplugging the machine takes considerably longer while the tank refills and reheats, and moving the machine means draining it. If you want speed without a permanently heated tank, no drip machine on this site offers it.
Capacity, and Two Numbers That Both Matter
The carafe holds 50 ounces, which BUNN calls ten cups on the five ounce drip convention, so roughly four large mugs. The tank holds 70 ounces. Those are different things and confusing them causes problems: the tank capacity is not brewing capacity, it is the reservoir of preheated water the machine draws from.
The pour in bowl on top has a water level indicator so you can see how much you have added, which is how you control the batch size. There is no clock, no timer, no brew strength selector and no 1 to 4 cup setting. Batch size is controlled entirely by how much water you pour in, and the machine will happily brew a 20 ounce travel mug or a full carafe with no setting change.
The Thermal Carafe and Serving
The carafe is vacuum insulated and double walled, and BUNN states it maintains serving temperature for more than two hours. There is no warming plate on this machine at all, which is the correct answer: a hot plate cooks coffee, and a machine that brews in four minutes has no business degrading the result over the next hour.
Thermal carafes trade visibility for temperature. You cannot see how much is left, the lid mechanism is a wear part, and the stainless interior needs proper cleaning or old coffee oils build up. Preheating the carafe with hot water before brewing extends how long the coffee stays hot and no listing in this category mentions it. If you want the same thermal approach with a published brew temperature and a timer, the Zojirushi EC-YTC100XB is the alternative.
The Sprayhead and the Taller Funnel
BUNN fits what it calls a commercial style multi stream sprayhead, which showers water across the whole bed of grounds rather than dripping onto one point. On a machine that pushes a full carafe through in four minutes this is not decoration. Fast water through an unevenly wetted bed would channel straight through and under extract, so distribution and speed have to be designed together.
The funnel is engineered around BUNN’s own paper filters, which the listing states are a quarter of an inch taller than other filters, and the extra height is what stops grounds overflowing at the high flow rate. That is worth taking seriously as a running cost. Standard supermarket filters are not the shape this machine is built for, and using them risks exactly the overflow the taller design exists to prevent. Budget for BUNN filters specifically rather than assuming the generic disposable filters stocked for other machines will do.
Build, Origin and Footprint
The dimensions are 8.3 inches deep by 13.9 inches wide by 14.9 inches high and the weight is 10.4 pounds, which is the heaviest drip machine covered on this site. That weight is consistent with a stainless steel tank full of water and it is the physical evidence for the architecture. At 14.9 inches tall this will not fit under a standard wall cabinet, and at 13.9 inches wide it needs a real run of counter.
The finish is matte black with a polished stainless backsplash and top band. There is no wattage and no standby power figure. There is no descaling guidance, which matters more here than anywhere else on this site: a tank of water held permanently hot is the ideal environment for scale, and scale in that tank is what eventually kills these machines.
Nothing states whether the carafe is dishwasher safe, whether replacement carafes are sold, or what the warranty period is. Nothing describes what happens if the machine is switched off at the wall regularly rather than left running. The listing dates and the model number CSB3T-B are consistent.
Who It Suits
This suits a household where several people want coffee at unpredictable times, where waiting eight minutes for a pot is the actual irritation, and where the machine will stay plugged in permanently. It suits anyone who has been served BUNN coffee in a diner and wanted the same at home. The thermal carafe and the four minute brew together mean the coffee is both quick and still good an hour later.
Look elsewhere if you want a timer, a brew strength selector, or a machine you unplug between uses, because unplugging defeats the design.
