Description

The Breville Barista Touch BES880BTR is the most automated machine in Breville’s Barista series while still using a portafilter. It combines an integrated conical burr grinder, ThermoJet heating with PID control, an automatic microfoam steam wand and a colour touchscreen that walks through grind, brew and milk as three steps. Capacity is a half pound bean hopper and a 67 ounce water tank, and the machine measures 12.7 inches deep, 12.5 inches wide and 16 inches tall at 21.8 pounds.

The pitch is that it goes from beans to espresso in under a minute with five preprogrammed cafe drinks and space to create, name and save eight of your own. That places it between the manual Barista machines and a true bean to cup automatic: you still lock in a portafilter and you still hold a milk jug, but the machine decides the grind time, the shot volume and the milk temperature unless you tell it otherwise.

The Touchscreen Workflow

The screen is the defining feature. It presents grind, brew and milk as a sequence with adjustable coffee strength, milk texture and milk temperature for each saved drink. Eight custom profiles mean several people in a household can each keep their own settings without renegotiating them every morning.

What the screen genuinely improves is the learning curve. On a conventional machine the relationship between grind setting, dose and shot time has to be inferred; here it is displayed and adjusted directly. What it does not do is remove the physical steps: coffee still has to be tamped and the portafilter still has to be locked in. Anyone expecting a one button machine should be looking at a different category entirely. The Barista Pro offers the same hardware with an LCD and a manual steam wand for less money, and is the direct alternative for anyone who does not value the touchscreen and automatic milk.

Grinder and Dosing

The integrated conical burr grinder doses on demand with adjustable grind control, feeding directly into the portafilter. Grinding at the moment of use rather than in advance is the single largest improvement available in home espresso, because ground coffee stales within minutes rather than days.

Breville includes the Razor precision dose trimming tool for levelling the puck to a repeatable height, and a dosing funnel attachment to stop grounds spraying past the basket. The half pound hopper is modest, which is appropriate: a large hopper simply means beans sitting exposed to air for longer. Both single and dual wall baskets are supplied, which matters because it lets the machine work with pre ground coffee in dual wall mode and with properly ground fresh beans in single wall mode.

Heating and Extraction

ThermoJet heating reaches extraction temperature in a stated three seconds, with digital PID temperature control holding the setpoint and low pressure pre infusion ramping gradually at the start of the shot. This is the same heating architecture as the Bambino Plus, applied to a larger machine.

The consequence is a machine that is ready almost immediately but has limited thermal reserve. For a household making a few drinks at a time this is not a constraint. For sustained back to back production it is the difference between this machine and a dual boiler. Breville rates the machine at 1680 watts on 110 to 120 volts and states a two year limited warranty.

Automatic Milk Texturing

The steam wand textures milk automatically to a programmed temperature and texture level, so a saved latte profile produces the same milk every time without the operator judging it by hand or by ear. Combined with the drink profiles, this is what makes the Barista Touch usable by someone who has never made a coffee before.

The limitation is the same as on any automatic wand. It will not respond to a different milk, a different jug or a deliberately different texture the way a manual wand under a trained hand will, and it cannot be pushed beyond its programmed range. Buyers who want to learn latte art properly will eventually find it restrictive, which is precisely why Breville also sells the manual wand machines in the same series.

Cleaning, Water Filter and Running Costs

Breville supplies a ClaroSwiss water filter, a water hardness test strip and a cleaning kit. The test strip exists so the machine can be told how hard the local water is, which in turn sets how often it will demand descaling. That is worth doing properly on first setup rather than skipping, because scale is what eventually ends the life of a heating system.

The filter is a recurring consumable and so are backflush tablets, and both should be counted alongside beans when working out what the machine costs to run. A bean to cup automatic has similar consumables; a manual machine with no grinder has fewer. The integrated grinder also needs periodic burr cleaning, since oily dark roasts leave residue that dulls performance over months rather than years. None of this is onerous, but a machine at this price is a maintenance commitment rather than an appliance that can be ignored. Buyers who would rather have the dosing and tamping mechanised should compare the Barista Express Impress, which uses the same platform with different assistance.

What the Specifications Do Not Settle and Known Annoyances

The listing does not state the pump pressure, the brew temperature range, the number of grind settings or the portafilter size, though the accessory list identifies it as 54 mm. The operation mode field reads fully automatic, which overstates it: this is a semi automatic machine with automated grinding and milk. The country of origin field reads USA, which is inconsistent with Breville’s manufacturing and should be treated as unreliable.

Two annoyances appear consistently in published owner feedback. The drip tray fills quickly, partly because the machine purges the heating system between brew and steam, so it needs emptying more often than the machine’s size suggests. And the water tank is awkward to access on a unit this deep, which is a recurring theme across Breville’s larger machines. Neither affects the coffee. Both affect how the machine feels to live with.

Who It Suits

The Barista Touch suits a household where more than one person makes coffee, where the drinks are mostly milk based, and where nobody wants to learn to steam. Saved profiles, an integrated grinder and automatic milk make it about as close to a one button machine as a portafilter design gets, and the touchscreen genuinely shortens the learning curve. The 67 ounce tank supports real daily volume.

It is the wrong machine for anyone who wants to develop technique, since the automation is the point and removing it means buying a different model. It is also poorly suited to small kitchens at nearly 16 inches tall and 21.8 pounds. Buyers who want the drinks with no portafilter at all should look at the super automatic espresso machines, and buyers wanting manual control at lower cost should compare the manual options across the espresso machine category.
