Filters are the cheapest component in drip brewing and one of the few that changes the coffee in ways you can taste immediately. They are also the part most likely to be bought wrong, because the sizing system is inherited from several different manufacturers and none of the numbers mean anything obvious.
There are really only three decisions: the shape your machine takes, the material you want, and, if you go with paper, which grade. Everything else is packaging.
Shape Comes First
Drip machines use either a cone or a flat bottom basket, and the two are not interchangeable. A flat basket spreads grounds in a shallow, wide bed. A cone concentrates the same dose into a deeper column so water passes through more coffee on its way down.
That difference has a real effect. Cones tend to produce a slightly cleaner, more layered cup because the bed depth extends contact time in the middle, while flat baskets are more forgiving of an uneven dose and a coarse grind. Neither is better in the abstract, but your machine has already made the choice for you. Look at the holder rather than the box: if it tapers to a point it is a cone, if it has a flat floor it is a basket.
What the Numbers Mean
Cone filters carry a number that describes size, not quality. Number 2 fits small cone brewers in the four to six cup range. Number 4 is the standard for eight to twelve cup machines, which is why the Melitta number 4 cone filters are the size most households end up buying. Number 6 covers the largest home cones and some commercial units.
Basket filters are sized by cup range instead of number, most commonly as an 8 to 12 cup basket, with a smaller junior size for compact brewers. A basket filter that is too small will collapse inward and let grounds past the rim; one that is too large will fold over on itself and channel water down the crease.
Bleached, Natural and Compostable
White paper filters are bleached, and the method matters more than the color. Oxygen bleaching and the chlorine free processes used by mainstream brands are the current standard, and they leave no meaningful residue. Older chlorine bleaching is largely gone from the market.
Natural brown filters are simply unbleached. They are chemically the plainer option and they cost slightly less, but unbleached paper has a more noticeable papery flavor on the first pour, which is the reason rinsing is worth the trouble. Rinsing Actually Does Something
Putting the filter in the basket and running hot water through it for a few seconds before adding coffee does two useful things. It washes out the dry paper taste, which is most noticeable in unbleached filters and in cheaper stock, and it seats the filter against the basket walls so it cannot fold over during the brew. It also warms the basket slightly, which helps on machines that already run cool.
On a timed overnight brew this is not possible, which is one more small argument for using better paper if your machine brews while you sleep.
Permanent Filters Change the Cup
Gold tone and stainless mesh filters replace paper entirely. Their pores are far larger than paper’s, so they let coffee oils and very fine particles through into the carafe. The result is a heavier, rounder body with more texture and, for some people, a slight cloudiness and a little sediment at the bottom of the cup.
Whether that is an improvement is a matter of taste rather than quality. Paper gives a cleaner, more transparent cup that shows off a distinctive bean. Mesh gives a fuller, more rustic one. Mesh filters demand more of the grind. Anything too fine passes straight through, so a permanent filter generally wants a slightly coarser setting than paper does in the same machine. They also need real cleaning rather than rinsing, because trapped oil in the mesh goes rancid and taints later brews.
The Cost Question
Paper filters are cheap enough that the savings from switching are modest, though not nothing over years of daily brewing. The stronger arguments for permanent filters are never running out and not generating a filter to throw away each morning. The stronger arguments for paper are the cleaner cup, a two second cleanup and no maintenance.
A reasonable compromise is to keep both: a permanent filter for daily brewing and a box of paper for when you have bought beans worth tasting cleanly.
Common Mistakes
Folding a flat filter into a cone shape is the most frequent one, and it reliably puts grounds in the carafe. Doubling filters to prevent overflow is another; it slows the flow enough to over extract and usually makes the overflow worse. Leaving a wet used filter in the basket overnight is the third, since a warm damp basket is a good home for mold.
Overfilling is quieter but just as damaging. Grounds should not sit above the filter rim, because water will run over the edge and bypass the bed entirely, which produces weak coffee and sediment at the same time.
Choosing
Identify the shape of your holder, then buy the size printed for your cup range and keep to it. Rinse the paper if the schedule allows. If you want more body, try a permanent filter and coarsen the grind slightly to suit it.
